Nutrition

At College Grove Nursery  we take healthy eating seriously and therefore we employ our own qualified and highly experienced Catering Manager. Karen has overall responsibility for the provision of all meals and snacks and has been part of the team since 1995. During this time she has encouraged children to eat a healthy, balanced diet.

As part of our ongoing promotion of healthy eating, we hold the highest ‘Food Hygiene Rating’ of 5 gained through the environmental health department. We are kept constantly up to date with all current issues, regarding healthy eating, by regularly accessing the internet and other medias. All staff have the basic food hygiene certificate and 2 staff members are qualified to level 2.

Food, using only fresh ingredients, is prepared on the premises. All children are catered for, including small babies and all special dietary requirements.

Our menus are based on a three week rota consisting of fish, chicken, red meat (excluding beef) and vegetarian dishes. The midday meal always includes at least three different types of fresh vegetables and a carbohydrate e.g. potato, rice, pasta or noodles. We take pride in the fact that all food is prepared and cooked fresh and processed or fried foods are not part of our diet. Children also take part in the preparation and cooking of certain foods e.g. making pizzas, baking and chopping vegetables. In addition to our varied menus we try to include ‘themed’ days such as Mexican, Indian or Italian. The children play a major role in the preparations for these days, which furthers their knowledge and understanding of different food types. Staff at College Grove Nursery are encouraged to provide a positive role model for the children by sampling the different foods and eating alongside the children at mealtimes.

Allergen Coding Chart

New legislation means that any business selling/serving food, whether pre-packaged or prepared on site, must offer information to customers regarding the 14 allergens named by the FSA, which can be found in food. This includes any allergen brought onto the premises and used within the food.

To ensure that College Grove Nursery complies with this legislation we have added a simple code to all of our menus. This information is always on display and accessible to everyone.

The information below relates to the coding we have used:

CELERY – Ce
GLUTEN – G
CRUSTACEANS (crab, lobster etc.) – C
EGGS – E
FISH – F
LUPIN – Lu
MILK – M
MOLLUSCS (mussels, squid etc.) – Mo
MUSTARD – Mu
NUTS – N
PEANUTS – P
SESAME SEEDS – Se
SOYA – S
SULPHITES (dried fruits etc.) – Su

Every effort is made to ensure that the dietary needs of all our children are met and those with allergies and preferences are given a meal as similar as possible to the menu. In the event of an alternative being made for a child with specific dietary requirements, information on the allergens is available upon request.
